the Best cultural activities to do along the Bristol Harbourside

Bristol is a city rich in history and culture. We are so fortunate that many of the best sites of historic and cultural interest in Bristol are only a couple of minutes walk from our take away at Wapping Wharf. We’ve got the M Shed, Arnolfini, SS Great Britain, The Matthew, and the Watershed - all great days out for history enthusiasts or fans of art and culture, or brilliant rainy day activities for the family. Here are some of our favourite activities to do with friends and family along the Bristol Harbourside.

Art and museums

M Shed

The M Shed is a museum situated just opposite LOKI POKÉ at Wapping Wharf, and has exhibitions on Bristol culture. If you’re keen on photography or love nature, M Shed is currently hosting the Wildlife Photographer of the year (until June 2022). They also have a working exhibition right outside: the iconic M Shed cranes built in 1951, which previously were used to transfer transit and cargoes from ships.

Bristol harbour railway

Love trains? Take a steam train ride on Bristol Harbour Railway from M Shed, which was built in 1870. The railway runs from the M Shed and the SS Great Britain or alongside the New Cut to Vauxhall footbridge.

Arnolfini

Arnolfini is Bristol’s local centre for arts and exhibitions. They are currently hosting exhibitions from artists including Donna Huanca, Paula Rego and Polly Braden. They also have events including life drawing, mindful colouring and an art cart which encourages kids to make art right there.

SS Great Britain

The SS Great Britain is a rescued and restored ship from the Victorian era. Designed by Brunel it was the first large ocean-going ship built to cross the Atlantic, but is now in a dry dock in Bristol Harbour. Upon entry to the SS Great Britain there are several displays which explain the history of the ship. You then walk through the restored ship which has a variety of interactive displays, sounds and smells which make you feel like you are back in the Victorian era! There are also audio tours available and the crew on board are really knowledgeable. SS Great Britain has won over 50 awards, including ‘Permanent Exhibition of the Year’ in the Museums and Heritage Awards 2019.

WaterShed

The harbour is also home to the Watershed, a theatre showcasing independent films, events and live music. They also have a buzzing bar and cafe area with WiFi! Check out their website for their current schedule.

Please let us know on our social media if you visit any of these and don't forget to pop in to LOKI POKÉ to say hi when you do!
